NGA TAMA TOA: THE PRICE OF CITIZENSHIP

Nga Tama Toa: The Price of Citizenship was launched on October 2008 at Te Poho o Rawiri Marae, Gisborne. It was almost 62 years after Sir Apirana Ngata wrote about his plans for a C Company history and almost seven years after the first chapter was written under the leadership of Dr Monty Soutar.

Parade

The book launch day itself included a re-enactment by the descendants of C Company of the return home to Te Poho o Rawiri Marae on 25 January 1946. The Gisborne Herald reported on this day in 1946 saying:

The powhiri at Te Poho o Rawiri, held under a blazing sun, was unrivalled in the marae’s recent history. People had come from all over the Gisborne-East Coast district. There was a special regard for this contigent as they were the last of C Company to return. As the marching column approached the marae, the crowds excitement mounted to fever pitch. But still they waited in silence as the wero, the challenge of welcome, was issued. Then as the troops marched onto the marae, a welcoming haka was performed by a combined group, united in tribal pride.” (p.365 – Nga Tama Toa: The Price of Citizenship)

Train

As for the re-enactment on 25 October 2008, Ngai Tamanuhiri arrived via train from Muriwai and met in Gisborne with the other descendants of C Company from Ngai Tai, through Te Whanau a Apanui, Ngati Porou and Te Aitanga a Mahaki and Rongowhakaata.

Powhiri

In the spirit of a mass kawe mate, almost 5000 converged on Te Poho o Rawiri Marae for a pohiri to return their C Company grandfathers to the marae, some of which never made it back there.

Marae

The then Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Helen Clark then launched the book, alongside C Company veterans.
